The National Initiative for Civic Education (NICE) and the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) jointly on 8 to 9 August this year hosted a Soap Opera training program at Crossroads Hotel in Blantyre.

The initiative aimed to equip participants with skills to create engaging soap operas that entertain, educate, and inspire audiences, particularly on election matters.

The two-day program covered soap opera production fundamentals, including scriptwriting, character development, storytelling techniques, and production planning. Participants engaged in interactive sessions, group discussions, and hands-on exercises, fostering a collaborative learning environment.

MEC Commissioner Francis Kasaira emphasized, “Artists have a vast audience reach, making them effective tools for disseminating crucial information and promoting behavioral change. We advise them to consider people’s rights and follow election laws in their artistic work.”

NICE Board Chair Lingalireni Mihowa stressed, “Investing in creative talent allows us to produce soap operas reflecting our unique cultural identity and addressing pressing social issues.”

Mihowa further noted, “The initiative marks a significant step towards elevating the local entertainment industry and harnessing soap operas’ power for social impact, especially ahead of the tripartite elections.”

Participant Rosemary Malipa from Pamajiga, Mzeru Nkupangwa, and Sewelo la Sabata praised the initiative, saying,

“We are pleased to be part of this NICE and MEC trust. This initiative encourages us to create impactful content.”She said.

She further said the training program demonstrated NICE and MEC’s commitment to engaging the entertainment industry in promoting election information and social change.
