The Employers’ Consultative Association of Malawi (ECAM) recently hosted a two-day workshop on practical strategies for handling employee disputes and no-fault dismissals, focusing on mitigating litigation.

The event, held from July 31 to August 1, 2024, at the Victoria Hotel in Blantyre, brought together HR professionals, business leaders, and industry experts to share knowledge and best practices.

ECAM President Anne Chavula described the workshop as crucial and a catalyst for change.

“The workshop aims to equip participants with the skills and knowledge to navigate complex employment processes, ensuring compliance with labor laws and minimizing the risk of costly litigation,” she said.

“We covered effective communication strategies for handling employee disputes and understanding no-fault dismissals and their implications.”Added Chavula.

Chavula emphasized the importance of proactive approaches to employment processes.

“By adopting best practices and staying informed about labor laws, employers can reduce the risk of litigation and create a more positive work environment,” she concluded.

Austin Msowoya, Chairperson for the Industrial Relations Court (IRC), noted that his office has seen an increase in related cases.

“Although we don’t have specific numbers, cases regarding industrial matters are on the rise, largely due to a lack of knowledge, which is why this workshop is essential,” said Msowoya.

Participant Gilbert Nyimbiri commended ECAM for hosting a timely and informative event.

“We engaged in interactive sessions, group discussions, and case studies, sharing experiences and insights to enhance our understanding of effective employment processes.

“This will make a significant difference in both employer-employee relations and our offices from today.”Said Nyimbiri.

ECAM is committed to supporting Malawian employers and promoting a positive business environment in the country.
