Secretary to treasury Betchani Tchereni has issued an apology to the people of Malawi following his controversial statements suggesting that people should refrain from threatening leaders and using votes as a means of coercion.

The apology comes in response to a letter from the Center for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives (CDEDI), which criticized Tchereni’s remarks. According to a statement released by the Lilongwe district administration, as reported by Timveni Online, senior officials met with Tchereni to discuss the issue, leading to his formal apology.

The statement also indicated that Tchereni is prepared to meet with senior members of CDEDI to discuss the matter further and explore solutions moving forward.

However, Sylvester Namiwa, the head of CDEDI, has stated that their stance on the matter remains unchanged. Namiwa emphasized that their position will continue to advocate for accountability from public officials, either through direct apologies or by stepping down from their positions.

Tchereni’s apology reflects the ongoing sensitivity surrounding political discourse and the importance of respectful communication in addressing public concerns.
