Blantyre City Council Elects New Mayor and Deputy Mayor

In a historic election held on July 22, 2024, the Blantyre City Council has elected a new mayor and deputy mayor.

The election saw the participation of all councilors, who cast their votes to choose their preferred candidates.

The newly elected Mayor of Blantyre City is Joseph Makwinja, from the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), who secured 16 votes in the mayoral election, defeating Getrude Chirambo of the DPP , who came second with 14 votes.

Making his speech Makwinja said is set to execute his duty.

“Democracy has prevailed and I am honored to serve this great city” Said Makwinja.

On his part ,t he Outgoing Mayor who opted not to compete in the election, Wild Ndipo has since congratulated both the newly elected office bearers in the duo positions promised to assist them in time of need, and deemed the election as free and fair.

The deputy mayor position spotted Bangwe Nth and iamI Ward council Isaac Join Osman of DPP with 11 votes who represent the Blantyre City North constituency.

Councillor Osman is a young and dynamic leader who has been instrumental in promoting youth empowerment in the city.

In his acceptance speech, Osman thanked the councilors for their trust in him and promised to work tirelessly for the development of the city.

The newly elected Deputy Mayor also expressed his gratitude and said would be committed to supporting the mayor in his endeavors.

“I am excited to work with the new Mayor and the entire council to drive development in our city,” he added.

“I pledge to work with the council in improving the welfare of residents and business operators, including the street kids,” Osman said in his immediate reaction regarding his past experience in the same life.

Outgoing Deputy Mayor Fane Balaba Kanojelera, who was seeking a second term, came second with 10 votes, while Gerald Lipikwe secured 9 votes.

The election was observed by officials from the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) and was deemed free and fair.
