MACRA concerns with graphic pictures on tragic plane crash
The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) says it is deeply concerned by the circulation of graphic and insensitive material related to the tragic plane crash that has claimed the life of Vice President Dr. Saulosi Chilima and eight others in Chikangawa Forest in Mzimba district on Monday, 10th June 2024.
The MACRA has urged the public to be highly sensitive and refrain from sharing or spreading offensive content observing that victims and their families deserve to mourn in peace, free from further distress reminding all that this a devastating time for the nation and Malawians must honor the memory of the victims with utmost dignity and respect.
In a statement dated 12th June, 2024 signed by its Director General Daud Suleman, the MACRA has reminded the public that the circulation of disturbing or exploitative material especially related to tragic incidents, can cause immense harm and distress.
The MACRA has advised Malawians to come together to support one another and create a space of compassion, to be mindful of their digital actions, and to prioritize empathy, dignity, and respect online assuring the public that it is committed to fostering a safer and more ethical digital space.
“Together, let’s build a responsible and considerate digital community that upholds human values,” reads the statement in part.
UTM Secretary General Dr. Patricia Kaliati has been quoted in the media as having appreciated those who are sharing pictures purportedly to be that of the departed Vice President of the Republic of Malawi Dr. Saulosi Chilima.
Kaliati has said it is through these pictures that Malawians can see more questionable circumstances surrounding the tragic plane crash in Mzimba district, it is not surprising that organizations have joined the UTM in demanding an independent Commission of Inquiry to establish the truth.
“From the pictures, people can see a stranded Dr. Saulosi Chilima holding a Rosary in his hand depicting that he might have died whilst praying to Mother Maria to come to his aid,” she said.
Meanwhile, a Malawi Congress Party (MCP) diehard of Mvera in Dowa district Mr. Rodgers Kamphangala, has pleaded with MACRA to allow those who possess graphic pictures of the tragic plane crash to share on various social media platforms saying this will be taken as the first step to independent Commission of Inquiry.
Kamphangala said already some eyewitnesses have already claimed that the crashed plane never reached Mzuzu raising many questions without answers that the communities surrounding Raiply and Chikangawa Forest hold the key for the truth to prevail.
