Nankhumwa bows out of age limit bill

Leader of Opposition in Parliament Dr. Kondwani Nankhumwa, says his resolve to challenge and compete in the political arena remains steadfast, saying he is prepared to confront any opponent including DPP leader Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika on the presidential ballot in the 2025 general elections.
Nankhumwa said it has become evident that some members of the DPP are cynically attempting to exploit his name in the context of the age limit bill reintroduction with the sole purpose of gaining political sympathy from the public.
He said he withdrew the motion for the age limit bill during its previous consideration saying any claims linking him to a renewed effort to bring this bill to Parliament are entirely unfounded for and should be disregarded.
Writing in a statement dated 4th April, 2024 Nankhumwa has urged all Malawians to disregard any assertions linking him to the age limit bill in Parliament even if another individual decides to table the said bill describing the claims as false and lack any basis in reality.
“Despite my withdrawal of the motion for the bill, they persist in shamelessly associating me with this matter,” reads part of Nankhumwa’s statement.
Church organizations, Civil Society Organizations (CSOS), activists and Malawians voiced out their concerns against the tabling of age limit bill in Parliament arguing that it is targeting at one individual, Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika.
They warned Members of Parliament (MPs) against deliberating on age limit bill saying this will deliberately make them to forget to deliberate on the critical issues the country is sailing through such as social and economic challenges.
DPP’s Lilongwe Urban Youth Governor, has hailed Nankhumwa for coming in the open withdrawing age limit bill saying had he did it early, he would not have received insults and castigations from patriotic Malawians.
The Youth Governor speaking on a strict condition of anonymity said DPP more than ever is now united because all the people who were working as agents of the MCP while DPP were expelled from the party for either joining the MCP or forming their own political party.
He said Malawians of goodwill have now realized that expelled Nankhumwa has let them down through watching dubious bills in Parliament being passed into law under his watch and no wonder, Nankhumwa is the worst leader of opposition Malawi has ever had since 1994.
The Governor has challenged the MCP that chances of bouncing back into government in 2025 are almost zero advising it to hold an opinion poll in Ntchisi and Dowa, the districts which are regarded as MCP bedroom that if the elections are held today, President Chakwera will lose miserably.
“DPP and Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika are coming back in government in 2025 even if the party is barred from holding campaign meetings, Malawians are tired with the MCP,” said the Governor.
