Ethiopians Arrested for Illegal Entry
In efforts to combat illegal entry in the country, Immigration Officials in the Northern Region have arrested 15 Ethiopians on suspicion that they entered in the country illegally on 31st March, 2024.
This is happening days after another 52 Ethiopians charged for Six months in prison for the same case.
The arrested Ethiopians, all males were intercepted along Mtangatanga- Chasato, Mzimba road in Mzimba District following Immigration Officials routine check around the district and are being suspected of contravening Section 21(1) of the Malawi Immigration Act.
The Immigration officials have also impounded a minibus(Quantam),Grey in color, bearing registration number NB 9401 whose details are of M.S Phiri, P. O Box 471 in Lilongwe which is suspected to have been used to ferry the arrested suspects.
The driver of the vehicle abandoned it, after he was being chased by Immigration officials and left the 15 Ethiopians in the minibus hence the arrests.
All the 15 suspects are not in possession of passports or Visa to legally enter in Malawi.
Sergeant Francis Chitambuli Northern Region Immigration Public Relations Officer said Meanwhile, they are all in custody awaiting legal proceedings.
A total of 85 Ethiopians have been arrested at Regional Immigration Office North in the month of March 2024 alone and 2 Vehicles have so far been impounded.
