Chakwera attended Tropical Cyclone Freddy Memorial Service

President Dr Lazarus Mc Cathy Chakwera on Wednesday attended the first anniversary of the Tropical Cyclone Freddy in Mulanje.

Chakwera writes………

On the first anniversary of Tropical Cyclone Freddy, the First Lady and I joined fellow Malawians at a memorial service in respect of over 1200 citizens, who lost their lives.

Save for loss of life, the natural disaster also affected over 2.2 million people in 16 local authorities, displaced 650,000 and rendered an economic damage valued at US$506.7 million.

The service of worship, held at Mulanje Boma Park, has reinvigorated our national urge to sustain rehabilitation of affected communities and reconstruction of damaged infrastructure.

Estimations still put the total cost of recovery at US$680.4 million.

Going forward, we will continue rallying support to permanently provide comfort to vulnerable communities and build a disaster-resilient country to avoid similar fate in future.
