The video clip was recorded in Mzuzu not Karonga, MEC says

The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has denied reports regarding the video clip which was Circurating on social media which is showing Malawi Congress Party (MCP) officials giving handout to their members that the event took place in Mzuzu not karonga.

In a statement released on Monday March 25,2024 and signed by MEC Chief Elections Officer, Andrew Mpesi says Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) did and investigation regarding the video clip and in their findings they find that the event was conducted in Mzuzu not in karonga district and the event was organized by Frasco Mkandawire one of the aspiring candidate in the 2025 parliamentary election.

“The commission has established that the event took place on Saturday 23 March 2024 in area 18 in Mzuzu city and not in karonga district as alleged.

“The event was organized by Mr Frasco Mkandawire one of aspiring candidate for 2025 parliamentary election.”

The statement further say Frasco Mkandawire deny that he did not involve himself in any campaign rally for today’s karonga by-election.

“He has confirmed that at no time has been involved in campaign for karonga by-elections. The event was a coucus MCP area committees from constuency he want to contest.”

MEC has also advised some concerned parties and stakeholders that they should take note of fact about the result of investigation they did and refrain from associating the clip with conduct of karonga by-election.

Last week people on social media were awashed with a video clip which was showing an MCP official giving money to some of the party members.

Kaporo, Chiranga and Rukuru ward are the three ward which MEC will hold by-election on Tuesday March 26,2024 in karonga district.
