Mobilize your Subjects MEC ask Chiefs
Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Commissioner Caroline Mfune has urged Traditional Leaders in Karonga to mobilize their subjects to vote in the forthcoming 26th of March 2024 Local Government by-elections in three Wards in the District.
She said this on Thursday at Nkhando Teachers Development Centre in Chilanga Ward in Karonga Northwest Constituency, where MEC courted Chiefs on voter and civic education.
Mfune, asserted that traditional leaders play a pivotal role in elections owing to their close proximity to voters.
She observed, that people tend to become complacent about voting necessitating Chiefs to assume a significant role in addressing voter apathy.
“Voting is a constitutional right as such traditional leaders are key as they serve as a link between the electorate and the electoral process.
We need a huge voter turnout during the voting day and this can be possible if you mobilize your subjects to vote,”Mfune explained.
On his part, Village headman Mwamunyira, expressed his commitment to relaying the messages to his subjects ensuring active participation in the election.
“I am confident with the knowledge and skills that we have been imparted we will put them to use to ensure that there is a huge turnout of voters in this by-elections,” he said.
The Local Government by-election which will be conducted in three Wards of Rukuru and Chilanga Ward in Karonga Northwest Constituency and Kaporo Ward in Karonga North Constituency respectively follows the conviction of three Ward Councilors last September 2023.
