All set for Mzuzu Half Marathon This Sunday

All is set for second edition of 21 Kilometers Mzuzu City Half Marathon this Sunday 10 March in Mzuzu where over 105 athletes will battle for different prizes and over 90 relay race runners.
The Mzuzu City Half Marathon will be held for the second time after inaugural edition last year with the aim to promote healthy living and tourism in Mzuzu city.
Speaking after final preparatory meeting at Mzuzu Stadium, Malawi National Sports Council Spokesperson Edgar Ntulumbwa says preparations are over and Mzuzu residents should expect excitement tomorrow morning.
“We are done with all preparations all is in place for tomorrow morning so Mzuzu residents should come out and watch athletes.” Ntulumbwa said.
Ntulumbwa added that the record breakers will pocket extra K500 000 for 1 hour 4 minutes for mens with ladies record set at 1hour 18 minutes with the prize for the winner raised to K1.5 million from K1 million last year.
Sponsors to this year’s event include Lilongwe Dairy who are sponsoring the main event, Medical Aid Society of Malawi (MASM) will carter relay race costs, Itel Malawi, Lab Processors Limited and IBIB Consultancy are among other sponsors.
Apart from the marathon, there will also be a fun run, relay race and aerobics to spice up the event.
Some names include last year’s champion Chikondi Mwanyali, Kefasi Kasiteni, Chancy Master, while the ladies category last year’s champion Nalicy Chirwa, Dorice Fisher and Teleza Master just to mention a few.
The starting time is 6:30 am while the starting point is Saint John’s Hospital going to Marymount Girls Secondary School to Mzuzu Technical College to Chiputula; down to Mzuzu Airport to Shoprite Roundabout, to clock tower; past Taifa Market to stadium before running the second lap to finish inside the stadium.
