Karonga based rights activist Lyton Mangochi, has expressed his deep concern over the state of affairs of Chiweta Road in Rumphi district saying the road is in bad shape besides Ministers travelling on this road to Karonga without taking any action.

Mangochi said Rumphi East legislator Kamlepo Kalua was blocked by Speaker of Parliament Catherine Gotani-Hara not to ask any question to President Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwra when he appeared in Parliament to answer questions from Malawians through their MPs.

He said Kamlepo Kalua wanted to ask the President what plans he and his government have for Chiweta Road which passes through his constituency to Karonga saying many accidences are occurring along this road due to its bad shape.

Speaking through a video clip circulating in various social media platforms, Mangochi said President Chakwera has failed to live up to his promises that he will construct the M1 Road to Chiweta observing that this will not happen, it was a blue lie.

Mangochi has urged Malawians not to vote for the MCP led government for it to bounce back into government claiming that the 4 years under the MCP has been very painful years making lives of Malawians so bearable.

“MCP is a failed party, Malawians should not trust this party that it will bring other developments, let’s not vote for it anymore,” he said.

He has announced that concerned citizens from the Northern Region of Malawi will on 1st March, 2024 holds a vigil in the Chiweta hills to force the MCP led government honour its promise of constructing the Chiweta Road.

In 2015 the Luton Consultants of Scotland divided the M1 Road construction project into three phases, phase one was expected to start from Kamuzu International Airport (KIA) junction to Bua in Kasungu, second phase from Bua to Jenda and third phase from Jenda to where there is a sign post reading Mzimba town-off.

After President Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera was voted into government on 23rd June, 2024 he came with new promises of extending the road construction project from Mzimba turn-off to Chiweta in Rumphi district.
