MCP Supporters Stoned in Zomba
Barely three days after Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) members were harassed by Malawi Congress Party (MCP) in Lilongwe, on Saturday members of the ruling Malawi Congress Party members stoned by community in Zomba Mtonya constituency.
According to media reports in circulation, Sheikh Hashim Abbas, Deputy Presidential Advisor on Religious Affairs was scheduled to conduct an MCP rally at William village- Lambulira Trading centre in the area of Traditional Authority Chikowi in Zomba on Saturday afternoon.
The reports says as a strategy to mobilize hundreds upon hundreds of people patronizing MCP rallies, an announcement was made prior to the rally that there will be distribution of free maize bags to the affected hunger-stricken communities surrounding the area.
The free maize distribution news attracted thousands upon thousands of people coming from all walks of life to patronize the rally and go back home with a bag of maize on their heads and to their dismay, instead of the maize, there were lorries coming with people dressed in MCP t-shirts and zitenjes from other areas.
“This development did not go well with the communities and in so sooner, they started stoning the six lorries, harassing MCP members, chasing out the meeting convenors and everyone,” reads the reports in circulations on the wall.
Malawi will have General Election in September 2025.
