Police in Rumphi arrest a man for Personation and Attempted Theft

Police in Rumphi have on February 16, 2024, arrested a 36 year old man identified as Willard Simukonda for Personation and Attempted Theft.
Simukonda was arrested near Rumphi Prison gate at around 6:30 hours.
It is reported that on February 15, 2024, Simukonda met the wife of Weston Tembo at Rumphi prison where she went to see her husband who is on remand.
Simukonda tricked the wife of Tembo that he is from a law firm and that he can help Tembo to be released on court bail at a fee of hundred thousand Malawian Kwacha.
The wife of Tembo had no money hence gave the suspect a phone number for her father in-law who based in Mzuzu.
The suspect called him and introduced himself as Prison warder Simukonda and demanded a sum of Hundred Thousand Kwacha for his son to be released on court bail.
In response, he told the suspect that he does not have such money but the suspect insisted that even if he can just send Twenty Thousand so that he can start paper work of which he agreed and told him that he will send the money to the suspect the following day, on February 16, 2024.
However, before cutting off the call he asked the suspect if he could talk to his son Weston Tembo of which the suspect denied and he became suspicious.
Upon being suspicious, he called police in Rumphi who investigated the matter and arrested the suspect at Rumphi Prison where he was waiting to receive Twenty Thousand Kwacha.
The suspect will soon appear before court to answer charges of Personating a public servant and Attempted Theft.
Simukonda hails from Tchendo village in the area of Traditional Authority Mwaulambia in Chitipa district.
Police are urging people in the district not to make official transactions with unknown persons.
