Mary Navichi was on Monday dismissed as the leader of opposition in the Parliament by the Speaker of the National Assembly, Catherine Gotan Hara.

The drama erupted in the Parliament when Gotan Hara asked the leader of opposition to confirm the communication that was made on the resolution of the Business Committee.

Two Members of Parliament (MPs), Kondwani Nankhumwa and Mary Navichi stood up together to speak as the leader of opposition but Hara was quick to dismiss Navichi and allow the former Southern Region Vice President for the Democratic Progressive Party to continue with his remarks.

The opposition party, DPP appointed Mary Navichi, Member of Parliament for Thyolo Thava constituency as the leader of opposition a few days ago.

The appointment came amid infighting within the Party regarding the position of leader of opposition in Parliament between Member of Parliament for Mulanje Central Kondwani Nankhumwa and Dr. George Chaponda.

“Congratulations are in order to our Director of Women (National), Honourable Mary Thom Navicha MP for Thyolo Thava on her appointment as Leader of Opposition in Parliament,” reads part of the statement.

Embattled Nankhumwa was expelled from the Party alongside 10 others for calling, leading and attending the December 6 2023 nullified national governing council (NGC) meeting in Lilongwe.

Besides Nankhumwa, others who were expelled include Zomba Chisi legislator Mark Botomani, who also serves as Public Accounts Committee of Parliament chairperson, former secretary general Grezelder Jeffrey, former director of women Cecelia Chazama, publicity secretary Nicholas Dausi and executive members Joe Thomas Nyirongo and Ken Msonda.
