Heavy Rains left Many Villagers Homeless in Dowa
Heavy rains have caused significant damages in Dowa district leaving many villagers without shelter as their houses were swept away by running water following overflowing of Kasangazi River in the district.
13th January, 2024 will be a day to remember by the people of Dowa Central and North East Constituencies, the rains started as normal but were caught up by heavy running water coming from other areas where there was heavy rainfall.
Villages such as Mponela, Kachulu, Bimphi, Chidoola and John in the area of Traditional Authority Mponela have been heavily affected while in the area of Senior Chief Msakambewa, Maliya, Kaphaizi, Thezo villages are in all mourning.
A multi -million Kwacha bridge which acted as a means of communication recently constructed in Maliya village, Group Village Headman Msochi in the area of Senior Chief Msakambewa has been washed away and this will greatly affect many learners who used to pass on this bridge to and fro school in the area.
Efforts are under way by the district’s Department of Disaster and Management Affairs (DoDMA) to assess the damage caused by the heavy rains and providing necessary support to the affected people during this difficult time.
Local authorities are being reported to be mobilizing resources for relief, and support to those who have been greatly affected by the devastation of heavy rains in Dowa district.
