Man drowns in Chipata river in Mzimba


A 53-year-old man, Kachigodi Mwale, drowned in Chipata river after failing to cross it which was flooded on December 25, 2023 when he attempted to access his master’s house which is to the other side of the river in the district.

It is reported that Mwale, (now deceased), on the stated date, left his home to visit his master who stays to the other side of the river, a thing which was against his boss instruction.

It has been established that Mwale went missing on December 25, 2023, suspected to have attempted to cross the flooded Chipata river.

His lifeless body was discovered on December 29, 2023 by dog hunters in a decomposed state.

The matter was reported at Jenda Police Station whom together with medical personnel from Jenda Rural Hospital visited the scene. Result of postmortem conducted at the facility revealed that death was due to suffocation secondary to drowning.

Meanwhile, Jenda Police Station is cautioning people in the area to avoid crossing flooded rivers during rainy season.

Mwale hailed from Ngolomi Village, Traditional Authority Msakambewa in Dowa district.
