Mzuzu City Half Marathon Second Edition Launched
Malawi National Council of Sports (MNCS) in collaboration with Mzuzu City Council and Moyale Barracks on Thursday launched the 2024 Mzuzu City half Marathon.
This was disclosed by the board member and chairperson of sports council development committee of the council Mrs. Helen Tasosa Mpinganjira during a press briefing on Thursday morning that was held at Sunbird Mzuzu hotel.
The 2024 Mzuzu City Marathon is schedule to take place on 10th March 2024 from Mzuzu Upper Stadium.
Speaking to reporters, Malawi National Council of Sports (MNCS) board member and chairperson of sports development committee of the council Mrs. Mpinganjira said the International athletes will be allowed to register once the route certified.
“Actually last time as we announced it was like a starting point, we wanted to ensure people from northern region that we have come to stay that’s what we have done, now this is just to inform the nation as well as the northern region in particular that indeed the Mzuzu City Half Marathon is here to stay, and we are looking at having it as a full marathon.
“So as per our announcement the route has been not changed it is still the same we used last time, the turnup was good last year with 102 participants and we expect to have more this year, and after certifying the route it’s when we can announce that international athletes can register but as of now only local athletes are allowed to register,” said Mpinganjira.
Chairperson of the Mzuzu City Half Marathon said after a successful event last time, the event is back this time with more fun.
“Last time it was very successful and this time we are trying to add some activities like Relay race, the 100 and 200 meters, people should expect more, what we want mainly is not as sports but people should be part of this kind of sports as people of Mzuzu, More people came last time and this year too we are expecting more than that, we are asking stakeholders to come and help the event more than last year,” said Mumba.
Representatives from Mzuzu City Council, Athletics Association of Malawi a d Moyale Barracks were there during the launch.
Other activities during the day will includes fun run, relay race, 100 and 200 meters race.
The winner will walk away with K1,500 million and the second position will pocket K1 million while the third position will went home with K500,000 for both men and women categories.
Chikondi Mwanyali and Nalicy Chirwa were winners of last year’s Mzuzu City Half Marathon in Men and Women categories respectively.
