Man Jailed 5 Years For Burglary, Theft

The Senior Resident Magistrate’s Court in Mzuzu on Friday, April 21, 2023 convicted and sentenced a 25-year-old man, Mark Mbizi Tembo, to 5 years imprisonment with hard labour for burglary and theft.

The court through state prosecutor Sergeant Medson Chunga heard that during the night of April 16, 2023 at Area 1B Location in Mzuzu City, the convict broke into a house of Euwin Chipeta and stole a television screen valued at K275,000.00.

Investigations were carried out which led to the arrest of Tembo and appearing before court he pleaded guilty to charges of burglary and theft.

In mitigation, he asked the court for leniency, saying he is a first offender.

In his submission, state prosecutor Sergeant Chunga asked the court to slap the convict with a custodial sentence, stating that these offences are becoming rife in Mzuzu City causing citizens to live in fear.

Passing sentence, Senior Resident Magistrate Issah Maulidi concurred with the state’s submission and went on sentencing the convict to 5 years IHL for burglary and 1 year IHL for theft to deter other would-be offenders.

The sentences will run concurrently.

Tembo comes from Kalindi Mbidzi Village in the area of Traditional Authority Mtwalo in Mzimba District.
