Two killed in Rumphi, Police launch manhunt for suspects

Police in Rumphi have launched a manhunt for suspects believed to have killed two people in the district.
On March 23, 2023, Levison Phiri whose other details are not available and currently at large, is suspected to have murdered 13 year Idah Ng’ambi who hailed from Mmina village traditional authority Mkowola in Machinga.
The suspect on the material day went to the house of Mr and Mrs Ng’ambi at Chijana Village under Traditional Authority Jalavikuba in Mzimba, where he only found Idah and her three siblings playing.
He enticed the kids to follow him home and get some roasted maize.
Idah did not come back home but her siblings who were picked by their mother at the suspect’s house.
Her body was discovered in a pool of blood on March 24, a few meters from the suspect’s house.
This was reported to Rumphi Police and a postmortem was conducted at Rumphi district hospital that revealed death was due to loss of blood as a result of stab wounds by a sharp object around the neck.
In another incident, 44 year Petronia Luhanga of Khutamaji village traditional authority Katumbi in the district was killed by unknown assailants in her house on March 23, this year.
She had left her home to Zolokere Admarc Depot to buy maize on the said date at around 12 noon with her friend.
After buying the commodity, the two stopped by a beer drinking joint to take some beers and returned home around 4pm.
The following day, her relatives did not see her until they checked in her house where they found her body lying lifeless.
A report was made at Hewe Police Post who visited the scene accompanied by medical personnel from Katowo Health Centre.
An autopsy on the body indicated she died of internal bleeding following an assault.
Meanwhile Police in the district have condemned the killings and appeal to those with information on the whereabouts of Levson Phiri and those behind Petronia Luhanga’s death to come forward and provide such information.
