5 family members perish in road accident

Six people including five from the same family have been reported dead today 23 March 2023 following a road accident at Naming’azi along Phalula – Zalewa road in Balaka district.

According to a police report The Malawi Guardian has seen, the driver was heading to Zalewa from Phalula and lost control upon reaching Naming’azi which led to the vehicle swerving off into a flooded stream and sunk.

The report further says the Toyota Ipsum saloon registration number BR 9652 had on board five members of the same family and was driven by Arkford Kamchokolo Mkundika aged 59 from Mtali village T/A Kalolo Lilongwe district.

The police have since said: “Postmortem results from Balaka District hospital indicate that these people died due to suffocation.

“The other deceased are MC Donald Mkundika, Mirrium Mkundika, Manderena Mkundika, Yona Mkundik, and precious Mkundika both from the same family,” reads the police report in part.
