Minister of Local Government Richard Chimwendo Banda has asked Government to form an independent committee to handle funds meant to help those affected wibyropical Cyclone Freddy and not a political team.

He has said this today in parliament when making a contribution as leader of the house to the presentation of cyclone Freddy assessment report by the state President Lazarus Chakwera in the house.

Considering high levels of corruption in Government in his opinion, this team’s secretariat should be in Blantyre. The team must consist of a digital information section from ministry of lands, Blantyre and Zomba city Assembly planners and relevant officials from affected districts, quantity and land economy surveyors, mapping experts in the country and beyond, Malawi bureau of standard and hydrolysis.

He further added that When disaster takes centre stage chances are high of having human right abuses to children, women and the elderly in the camps.

Banda has since asked Government to consider sending Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC) and the ombudsman to go on the ground in camps to record any act of human rights abuse.
