The state President, Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera has urged the newly appointed High Court Judges to give Citizens who cry for justice and equity.

The president was speaking in Lilongwe when he presided over the swearing in ceremony of four High Court Judges that he appointed on October 24 in exercise of the power conferred upon him by section III (2) of the Constitution of Republic of Malawi.

Speaking during the ceremony, Chakwera said the Citizens are crying for justice and the appointing of the judges is one way of addressing the issues and satisfying the cry by strengthening the justice system.

“My administration remains committed to advancing the cause of justice through capacity building of our Judiciary in collaboration with key judicial stakeholders.

“High Court Judges today must remember that this opportunity is in your hands. It is in your hands to give Citizens who cry for justice the confidence that their search for equity is not in vain. You must strengthen the justice system’s institution to the point that if anyone violates the rights of another, justice will be done swiftly, fairly and transparently,” he said.

In his remarks, the president said an assault of two elderly women by a mob in Mzimba district after being accused of causing someone’s death was a source of grief for the community.

“Evidently, the death was a source of a grief for the community and in their thirst foe justice. They wrongly took the law into their own hands and injured two vulnerable and defenceless women in the process. Mob justice is a crime and 20 member of the community has been arrested for the assault. Anyone who takes a law into his or her own hands will find himself or herself in the hands of the law,” added Chakwera.
