Unima closed

The University of Malawi [Unima] formerly Chancellor College has been temporarily closed following the disagreement between the Students and the Administration.
Students at the said institution have been holding vigils demanding the Administration to change the Academic Calendar which sees them having a holiday of 5 months.
On Monday, the Administration and Student’s Representative Council hold discussions to see the way forward but it was not fruitful.
Taking it’s action on the matter, the Administration has resolved to temporarily close the University citing the vigils that the students are holding pose threat to the University Community and the Public.
In a Memo signed by the University’s Acting Registrar, Mrs Mary Wasiri, the Administration said the students must vacate the campus by 12,00 noon on Wednesday.
“Please be informed that following the stalemate between Management and Student’s Representative Council, and knowing that the vigils posed a security threat to both University Community and the general public, Management has resolved to temporarily close the University with immediate effect. Students have been instructed to vacate the Campus by 12,00 noon today,” reads part of the Memo.
The Management added that te staff will be updated on further direction that the University will take in due course.
