Boy, 6 die after drowns in Lake Malawi


A six-year-old boy in Nkhata Bay District has drowned in Lake Malawi at Lichizi fishing camp where he went swimming.
The deceased has been identified as Mika Manda of Chikopeki Village in Traditional Authority Mkumbira in Nkhata Bay District.
Reports indicate that in the afternoon of October 31, 2022, the boy together with his elder brother went to the lake for swimming.
Whilst swimming, Mika reportedly went onto a rock where he accidentally slipped off and fell into the water.
Despite collaborative effort between him and his brother to get out from the water, the boy still got stuck and ended up drowning.
Police officers took him to NKhata Bay District Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
An autopsy conducted at the hospital revealed that the boy died due to suffocation.
Meanwhile, police in the district are advising parents and guardians to always be careful and have constant check on their children when they go to the lake for swimming.
