17 Ethiopians convicted for illegal entry
On 3rd October 2022, the Senior Resident Magistrate Court sitting at Mchinji convicted seventeen (17) Ethiopian nationals for illegally entering the country.
Brief particulars of the offense are that the seventeen (17) Ethiopian nationals did not have travel documents and were intercepted during the night of 2nd to 3rd October 2022 at Kamwendo trading centre in the district along Kamwendo-Kapiri road following a tip from well wishers who alerted Police.
Prosecutor for Immigration at Mchinji Border Post, Inspector Augustine Mulungu and his team together with Police prosecution team worked hand in hand on the case and successfully secured conviction at the Court. The illegal immigrants were on their way from Lilongwe heading Zambia.
The Ethiopian nationals were sentenced to six (6) months imprisonment with hard labour without option of a fine for contravening Section 21(1) of the Immigration Act as read with Section 37 of the same Act.
It was further ordered by Court that after completion of the sentence, the Ethiopian nationals should be deported within ten days.
