The embattled Leader of Opposition and the vice president for the Democratic Progressive Party, Kondwani Nankhukwa to remain as the Head of the Opposition members in the National Assembly.
This is so following conclusion that was made by the Party through the mediation by the court.
Three months ago, at it’s meeting held at former president Peter Mutharika’s Page House in Mangochi District, some party legislators elected Chaponda to replace Kondwani Nankhumwa as Leader of the Opposition in Parliament.
The battle for the position of Leader of Opposition in Parliament raged, after 22 Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) members of Parliament (MPs) obtained a court injunction stopping newly appointed leader, George Chaponda, from acting in or holding the position.
On Friday, according to the statement signed by the Party’s Spokesperson, Shadrick Namalomba, Democratic Progressive Party have withdrawn the name of Dr Chaponda as the Leader of Opposition and they will wait for the fresh election of the Leaders of Opposition.
“”DPP offered to withdraw the name of Dr Chaponda as Leader of Opposition until we hold fresh elections for the Leader of Opposition. We asked the Court to direct as to the period within which to hold the fresh election, but the Claimants refused to involve the Court in internal party affairs. So we left it to the party to decide when to hold fresh elections for the Leader of Opposition”
Hon Kondwani Nakhumwa will hold the position of the Leader of Opposition until fresh elections involving all DPP members of Parliament. The Party leadership will advise on the date and venue of the election,” reads the statement.
