Mzuzu city Mayor Nyirenda Granted bail

Mzuzu City Mayor Councillor Mayor Gift Nyirenda has on Friday Morning been Granted bail by the Seniro Resident Magistrate Felix Kamtsalira.

After being arrested last week on suspixion of defilement, Nyirenda was appearing before the court on Friday morning. The court denied to grant bail to the accused on Monday as the state through the prosecutors, Senior Supretendent Moja Phiri and Sub Inspector fancy Sichal had asked for the further remand of the accused for further seven days as the investigations of the charges pressed against him were still in progress.

The defence in its submissions through lawyer Davie Lameck said the accused should be given bail arguing that Nyirenda is a person of high standars in society who can follow the bail conditions.

Magistrate Felix Kamtsalira while tipping that the gravity of the offence can attract life imprisonment, said the accused is not a flight risk concuring with the lawyer saying that he is a well known person in a society and has a position.

Meanwhile, the Court has ordered Nyirenda to surrender all his travel documents to Mzuzu regional police office, not to move out of Mzuzu without notifying police, paying K500,000 cash bail bond and to also providing two sureties each bonded at K1,000,000 non Cash.
