The President of the Republic, Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera says his government will make sure that it creates more space for the youths to enable them contributing for the development of the country.

Dr Chakwera made the remarks on Friday at Civo Stadium in Lilongwe during the Commemoration of the international youth day.

He said Youths are the backbones of the country as they are the hubs of the innovative and creative ideas that can bring about positive change in the country.

“The youths are the people that we need to consider everyday because they are the ones who are mapping the way,” said Chakwera.

Minister of Youth and Sports Richard Chimwendo Banda said Chakwera’s emergency visit to the Commemoration ceremony is the sign of his commitment to the priority of Youths in the country.

“At least 51% of population in Malawi are youths. This is a day to remember that young people are there. We cannot talk about the economy of the country without mentioning the young people,” said Chimwendo Banda.

Chimwemwe Kayange of the Centre for Human Rights and Rehabilitation said the day gives the youths the platform where they get more information about various services including sexual Reproductive Health.

This year’s Youth Day which was commemorated under the theme of intergenerational solidarity, creating a world for all ages was also decorated by the poetry Association of Malawi.
