Road accidents claim three lives in Rumphi
Three people have been confirmed dead after being involving in two separate road accidents in Rumphi.
First incident occured on the wee hours of Sunday at Njakwa area where a 20-year – old White Zgambo from Majiyasingo under Traditional Authority Jalavikuba in Mzimba district died in a hit and run.
It is believed that the unknown driver was coming from Rumphi heading Bwengu direction. Upon arrival at Njakwa , he hit Zgambo who was walking on the left hand side of the road towards same direction.
Zgambo sustained severe head injuries and was pronounced dead upon arrival at Rumphi District Hospital.
The driver did not stop nor reporting to any police formation.
Meanwhile ,police have launched a manhunt for the fugitive driver.
The other incident involved two people at Chiweta hills. The deceased have been identified as Simeon Simbeye ,45, of Jembiye village and Mrs Pilesi Simwaka ,66, from Kachololo Village both under Traditional Authority Mwenewenya in Chitipa district.
Facts of the matter is that; the driver, Benson Chombe ,28,of Temwamkobe village of the same area was driving a Mitsubishi Canter Light Lorry registration number BY 1793 coming from Karonga heading Mzuzu with 20 passengers on board. They were coming from tombstone unveiling ceremony.
On arrival at Chiweta area whilst ascending the hills, he lost control of the vehicle and swerved to the nearside of the road where it overturned several times.
Due to the impact ,Simbeye and Simwaka sustained severe head injuries and multiple fractures on their legs.
They were taken to Rumphi District Hospital where they died upon receiving treatment.
The driver and remaining passengers escaped with different degrees of minor body injuries and are receiving treatment at the same hospital.
The motor vehicle got got extensively damaged.
The police are urging all road users to follow road regulations and signs when operating.
