Merlyne Nachulu Yolamu is set to become the first female Inspector General for Malawi Police as she has been named the new Inspector General of Malawi Police.

The announcement was made on Friday through a statement signed by the Secretary to the President and Cabinet, Collen Zimba as the President of the Republic Dr Lazarus Chakwera was exercising his powers conferred by the Section 154(2) of the Constitution of Malawi.

The appointment is subject to approval of the Malawi National Assembly.

Nachulu Yolamu will fill the void vacated by the former Inspector General, Dr George Kainja who was discharged from his duty as he was complicated in Zunneth Sattar’s corruption case.

Kainja is alleged to have received bribes from Sattar in exchange for procurement of Government contracts.

Mary Nangwale was the first Female Inspector General for Malawi Police when she as she was appointed for the post but Malawi Parliament rejected her.

Merlyne Nachulu Yolamu joins a cadre of women serving the country in key positions including the Director General of Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), Martha Chizuma, the Ombudsman, Grace Malera, Director General of Financial Intelligence Authority Malawi, Jean Priminta and Secretary to the President and Cabinet Zamba.
