Free Power connection materials in the process- Escom

The Electricity Supply of Malawi, Escom says the process of procuring the materials for free water connection is still in progress as they are planning to connect power to 10,000 new customers as intended in its 2022-26 integrated strategic plan.

Connecting power for free to customers was one of the manifestos of the Tonse Alliance when campaigning for the 2020 elections.

According to records, between 2019 to 2021 Escom received 258000 power connection applications and they have managed to connect power to 163 000 customers.

Spokesperson for the country’s power utility body, Kitty Chingota said they are trying to procure the materials so that the project commences.

She added that the initiative will only target customers who require an electric wire from their house to the pole.

“We are in the process of procuring materials and once we are done with it, the initiative will commence. We may not be specifically on when the project commences because most of our materials are imported. We are sticking to our strategic plan and we will implement it in the four-year plan that we have in place.”

Socio commentator Victor Chipofya has challenged the Tonse Alliance to fulfill its pledges as they are drawing to three years since ushered into power.
