Enter Chaponda, Exit Nankhumwa, as Parliament approve Opposition leader
National Assembly has approved the Appointment of Dr George Chaponda as the new Leader of the opposition in the parliament.
The National Assembly has since invited Dr Chaponda to the Business Committee meeting which is slated for June 29, 2022 Wednesday.
Part of the letter that the Malawi Guardian has seen, dated 27th June 2022 and signed by the Clerk Parliament Fiona Kalemba reads, “In the first place let me congratulate you for your appointment as the Leader of the opposition. In this regard, I have the honour to invite you to the above-captioned meeting.”
The meeting is expected to be held at Parliament Building in the Speaker Board Room.
Dr Chaponda was appointed the new Leader of the Opposition on Sunday replacing Kondwani Nankhumwa following a meeting held by some section of the Democratic Progressive Party Member of Parliament in Mangochi at Peter Mutharika’s residence.
Nevertheless, another section of the party is against the appointment saying Nakhumwa is the duly elected Leader of the Opposition.
