Bathroom turned to Laboratory at Phokera CDSS
Authorities at Phokera Community Day Secondary School at Traditional Authority Mbenje in Nsanje have improvised a bathroom into a science laboratory due to lack of laboratory space.
The School’s Deputy Head teacher, Jomo Tsamvulaminga says it has been so hard to deliver quality science lessons in such an environment saying students struggle to access the materials as teachers usually carry them during lessons adding that they are not safe.
Tsamvulaminga told the Malawi Guardian that some well-wishers built a house for the school’s Head teacher which was turned into an office adding that one of the rooms is being used as a library. He tells us that they have an enrollment of 201 students of which 99 are girls.
Nsanje District Education Manager, Greystone Alindiamao, recently revealed that out of the district’s 20 government secondary schools, only four have laboratories, a situation he attributed to the district’s poor performance in national examinations.
Conventional Secondary School, Bangula Secondary School, district secondary, Nsanje Secondary, Nyachilenda Secondary are the notable schools with science Laboratory, hence this affects Community Day Schools’ performance in the district.
Investivations revealed that majority of students in Nsanje drop science subjects citing lack of materials as the reason.
