As one way of ensuring portable and safe water to the Malawians, particularly Mchinji, the Water Mission Malawi has on Tuesday handed over the K144 million Kapiri Safe Water Project to the community.

More than 18,000 residents from nine villages under Traditional Authority, Dambe are expected to benefit from the improved Water service and safely managed Sanitation.

Speaking during the ceremony, Country Director for Water Mission Malawi, Nixon Sinyiza said the idea came after learning community complaints.

He said, “We have decided to bring this project to the community after learning that many people in the area were facing an increased risk of disease disease as they had been drawing water from unhygienic and unprotected sources due to lack of access to piped water.

He added that Project is being funded by the Georg Fischer and McKinnon Family in United States of America.

“The project which has been funded by the Georg Fischer and McKinnon Family in USA has managed to distribute 15 water points in the randomly selected villages targeting over 3,000 residents,” said Sinyiza.

Taking his turn, Senior Chief Dambe has commended the Water Mission Malawi for the gesture as most people were drinking water from unprotected sources such as Wells and Dams.

He has since urged his community members to take care of the project and have sense of ownership on it.
