Abida Applauds SRWB for Provision of Portable Water in Mangochi

The Minister of Water and Sanitation Abida Sidik Mia has heaped praise on to the Southern Region Water Board (SRWB) for rolling out free water connection saying the SRWB is helping thousands of people to access portable water.

She was speaking on Saturday in Mangochi District when launching an initiative and commission of the K158 million Mangochi Water for Life Pro-Poor Project.

“The initiative will make a huge difference among the people and will encourage more to get connected as people in the area were drinking unsafe water from unhygienic sources, but now they will be drinking portable water, ” said Mia.

According to SRWB Chief executive Officer, Duncan Chambamba, the utility has budgeted 5000 free new water connections for the 2022-23 fiscal year.

So far, the Southern Region Water Board have received close to 1700 applications and 240 have already been connected.

Taking his turn, SRWB Board Chairperson, Elias Chimulambe said the aim is to provide safe and portable water to the community thereby improving their hygiene and livelihoods.

Chimulambe added that the Water Utility is geared to implement the free new water connection and other tasks to ensure access to portable water and and Sanitation.

Under the pro-poor Project, which is being funded by a Dutch Utility Company Vitens Evidens International, Southern Region Water Board has constructed and rehabilitated 20 modern water kiosk and expansion of pipeline within Mangochi Town.

The project is targeting low income households who usually drink water from unhygienic and unprotected sources.
